If you happen to be in Minocqua on Saturday, April 10, and you see some crazy characters running down the street at midnight, don’t call the police – it’s all in good fun. Every year, hundreds dress up in goofy costumes and brave the brisk spring nighttime air for the annual Only Fools Run at Midnight 5K Run and Walk.
The race kicks off at the stroke of midnight at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua and winds its way downtown and through the pines of the Northwoods on the Bearskin State Trail. Up to 1,000 “fools” of all ages are expected to race this year, while spectators line the route with flashlights and other luminaries to help light the way.
While serious racers might opt for warm, aerodynamic attire, many participants pull out old Halloween costumes to join in on the foolish fun. If you’re lucky, you might spot Spiderman, a group of pink ladies or even a few hula dancers jogging through the pines at midnight. Other than for the fun of acting like a kid again, there is an incentive to don a goofy get-up – the best-dressed runner is awarded the title King or Queen of Fools.
Prizes are also awarded to the top three male and female racers in each age bracket, but many walk or run to support a good cause, as a portion of the proceeds from the event go to local organizations.
Feeling a little foolish? To pre-register for the event, visit minocquafoolsrun.com, or register the day of the event at Lakeland Union High School beginning at 10 p.m. All participants receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and the first 800 to register get a special goody bag.
